The bill Lab notes
Ask what each test is for, then ask what it costs.
A test list is more useful when each item has a reason and a clear charge.
A test needs a question to answer.
Ask the doctor or nurse planning your care what each test checks and how the result could change your treatment.
Video visits, phone calls and online messages are ways to receive care called telehealth. The state medical boards advise doctors to arrange any needed tests or examinations, or send you to another professional who can provide them.
This advice helps state medical boards write their rules. Your state’s rules decide what the service must do.
There is no general federal test list.
As of September 2026, general federal law on prescribing did not require every prescription to begin with the same blood tests.
A particular medicine or your state’s rules may still require tests. Your doctor also needs to decide which tests your health calls for.
Ask why each test is needed. A long list of tests does not show you what each one adds to your care.
Read the test list inside the bundle.
In the cash-lab review checked as of September 2026, bundles at different prices contained different test sets.
Some test orders we checked added a separate doctor’s fee to the displayed test price.
- Which named tests are included?
- Is the sample collection included?
- Is there an extra fee for the doctor ordering the tests?
- Who explains the result, and is that included?
Put possible repeat testing in the budget.
Ask whether the proposed care could involve more tests later, what would trigger them and how they would be charged.
Keep the answer next to the medicine and visit charges. A blank answer is still a question to take back.

We checked advertised test prices for people paying without insurance. The bundles contained different tests, so their prices cannot be compared as if they were the same.
